The Odyssey online can be found here.
SUMMARY: Hermes, bidden by Zeus, flies to Calypso's isle (Ogygia) to charge her to let Odysseus go. Obeying the god, Calypso helps her captive build a raft and set sail. But after seventeen days of smooth sailing, the raft is wrecked in a storm summoned by Poseidon. Odysseus battles the waves bravely and at length reaches shore on the land of the Phaeacians. Exhausted and naked, he finds shelter in a wood and sleeps.
QUESTION: This week let's talk about Calypso. What are your opinions on her? Do you feel bad for her at all, with her not understanding why Odysseus doesn't want to stay on her island? And lastly, do you think an island in the middle of nowhere is a good place for Calypso to live? Or might it be better for her to live somewhere closer to actual civilization and actual people (keeping in mind the consequences this may have)?
And lastly, I'd just like to mention that on Wednesday, May 12th, at 8:00 PM on the Discovery channel, there's going to be a two hour special on the Trojan Horse. Also, on A&E the same night, from 10 PM to 11 PM, there's going to be another special on the movie "Troy". Thought I'd give everyone a head's up. :-)
Hope everyone has a nice weekend. :-)
